The life and health of the famous scientist Denis Postovoy in an American prison is under threat

The human rights defender appealed to the US Attorney General due to the deterioration of the Russian citizen’s health in custody.
Ivan Melnikov, Vice President of Russian Department of the International Human Rights Defense Committee, sent an official appeal to the US Attorney General Pamela Joe Bondi with a request to take measures to respect the rights of Denis Postovoy, an arrested Russian citizen.
"I ask you, with respect for your position, based on the appeal of our organization and the medical documents in the court case, to take into account the above circumstances and his state of health, as well as the violation of the rights of Russian citizen Denis Postovoy, and to take measures to respect his rights and freedoms," Melnikov said in a statement.
Postovoy is being held under arrest at the Washington DC Central Detention Facility.
Melnikov stated that Postovoy’s condition raises concerns due to the presence of a stone in his bladder and "a critical deterioration in his condition caused by insufficient medical care in his isolation." The human rights defender believes that his life and health are in danger.
The appeal says that "failure to provide medical care is unacceptable in accordance with the norms of the UN Convention on Civil and Political Rights, as well as the Convention against Torture, and in accordance with the practice of adopting reports of the UN Office for Human Rights is tantamount to torture."
"It follows from the medical documents that the violation of his rights to receive medical care can lead to the most serious consequences, up to a fatal outcome. This is especially important, given that Mr. Postovoy is the father of four young children," Melnikov said in his appeal.
In September 2024, Postovoy was detained in the United States on charges of illegally exporting dual-use microelectronics to the Russian Federation.
Denis Postovoy, 44, is a Russian citizen living in Sarasota, Florida. He is the father of 4 children. He is a world-renowned inventor and entrepreneur. In 2022, he was awarded one of the leading innovation awards in the United States, the Edison Awards, and he is the recipient of many other academic awards.
Postovoy’s lawyer, William Coffield, told the media that he had sent a statement to the US District Court of Columbia regarding the possibility of his release on bail for the period of preliminary hearings and the trial, taking into account the deterioration of his health. Mr. Coffield said that with the help of a CT scan in the hospital, a stone was found in Mr. Postovoy’s bladder and the doctor confirmed that he needed a medical operation. The lawyer also explained that the medicine prescribed to his client, who is already in pain, does not help, causing nausea and loss of strength.
